How long should a video ad be?
By Saikat Dey and Sagar Dey, co-founders of MirrorCut · Updated October 20, 2026
Quick answer
For most social video ads, 15 to 30 seconds. Use 6 to 15 seconds when you just want people to remember your name, and up to about 60 seconds when you need to explain or demonstrate something to people who already know you. If you're unsure, cut one recording into 15, 30 and 60-second versions and test them.
The right length depends less on the platform than on what the ad has to do and who's watching. Here's how to choose, and how to make one recording into several lengths so you can test them.
Video ad length by goal
Start from what you want the viewer to do after watching:
- Awareness (remember the name): 6 to 15 seconds. One idea, one visual, the brand on screen early.
- Consideration (get them curious): 15 to 30 seconds. A hook, the problem, the product, one call to action.
- Conversion (get them to try or buy): 15 to 60 seconds. Room for a demo, a testimonial or an offer.
- Retargeting (people who already know you): 30 to 60 seconds is fine. They need reasons, not an introduction.
Shorter usually wins on cold audiences
People who've never heard of you give you very little time. A tight 15-second ad that lands one idea will usually beat a 60-second ad that makes four points, because most viewers never reach point two.
That doesn't mean cutting the substance. It means cutting everything that isn't doing work: the greeting, the logo intro, the pause before the punchline, the second example that repeats the first.
When a longer ad is worth it
Go longer when the extra time earns its place:
- A product that needs to be seen working, where the demo is the persuasion.
- A founder or customer story with a real arc: the problem, the turning point, the result.
- Retargeting people who visited your site and need answers to their objections.
- Placements where people chose to watch, such as YouTube, rather than scrolled into it.
Cut one recording into several lengths
You don't have to guess. Record once, then cut a 15-second, a 30-second and a 60-second version of the same ad. Keep the same hook in all three so you're testing length, not the opening line, and let the results tell you which length your audience prefers.
Keep the first few seconds identical across versions. The hook does most of the work in every length; what changes is how much of the story you tell after it.
Doing it in MirrorCut
MirrorCut is an AI video editor for your own recordings. Upload the footage and ask; its agent makes the edit on a real timeline, and every change is outlined for you to accept or revert. For example:
- “Cut this ad into 15, 30 and 60-second versions with the same opening”
- “Make this ad 15 seconds: keep the hook and the offer”
- “Tighten this ad by removing every pause and repeated point”
- “Add an end card with the offer to all three versions”

Questions
- Is a 60-second ad too long for social media?
- Not always. It's often too long for people who don't know you yet, and fine for retargeting or a strong story. Test it against a 15 or 30-second cut of the same ad.
- What's the ideal length for a Reels or TikTok ad?
- For most ads, 15 to 30 seconds, with the hook in the first few seconds. Check each platform's current limits and recommendations before you publish, as they change.
- Does a shorter ad always perform better?
- No. Shorter is the safer default for cold audiences, but the right length is the one that tells the story without padding. Test lengths with the same hook to find out.
