How to make a product demo video ad

By Saikat Dey and Sagar Dey, co-founders of MirrorCut · Updated October 20, 2026

Quick answer

Pick one job your product does and show it being done, fast. Open on the result, name the problem in one line, show the product doing the job in two or three quick steps with the waiting cut out, add one piece of proof, and end with a single next step. Keep it 15 to 45 seconds, with captions so it works on mute.

A demo ad shows your product doing something useful, and that's its whole advantage: instead of describing what you've built, it lets people see it work. Done well, it answers the question every viewer has, "would this work for me?", in a few seconds.

Most demo ads fail for one reason: they're a tour. Every menu, every setting, every feature. This guide is about the opposite: one job, shown quickly, with the boring parts cut out.

Pick one job, not a feature tour

Choose a single thing a customer wants done, in their words: "send an invoice", "turn a podcast into clips", "book a meeting without the back-and-forth". The ad shows that job from start to finish and nothing else.

If your product does five useful things, that's five ads, not one long one. Each can be tested on its own, and each speaks to the people who need that one thing.

A structure that works

Most good demo ads follow these beats, in this order:

  • The result first: show the finished outcome in the first second or two, so people know where this is going.
  • The problem in one line: what it's like without your product, in your customer's words.
  • The product doing the job: two or three quick steps, with every wait, load and typo cut out.
  • One piece of proof: a customer's line, a real number you can stand behind, or a before and after.
  • One next step: try it free, see the full demo, book a call. Just one.

How to record the demo

Record your screen at full resolution with a clean setup: close other tabs, hide notifications, use realistic sample data rather than "test test". Move the cursor slowly and deliberately, so viewers can follow it.

Record a voiceover separately, or talk while you click and fix it in the edit. If you're on camera, a short clip of you introducing the problem before the screen recording makes the ad feel more human.

  • Do the task two or three times, so the edit can use the cleanest run of each step.
  • Pause for a second between steps: it gives clean cut points.
  • Record more than you need. Cutting is easy; re-recording is not.

Editing it into an ad

Cut every second where nothing changes on screen: loading, typing, hunting for a button. Speed up anything that has to stay but isn't interesting. Zoom into the part of the screen that matters, so it reads on a phone.

Then make it work with the sound off: captions for the voiceover, and a short on-screen line for each step. Finally, export the shapes you need: 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, 1:1 or 4:5 for feeds, and 16:9 for YouTube and your website.

Mistakes that make demo ads fall flat

The usual reasons a demo ad doesn't work:

  • Starting with the logo or the login screen instead of the result.
  • Showing every feature, so no single one lands.
  • Leaving in the waiting: spinners, page loads and slow typing.
  • Tiny interface text that nobody can read on a phone.
  • No proof, so it looks like every other product's demo.
  • Ending without a clear next step.

Doing it in MirrorCut

MirrorCut is an AI video editor for your own recordings. Upload the footage and ask; its agent makes the edit on a real timeline, and every change is outlined for you to accept or revert. For example:

  • “Make a 30-second demo ad from this screen recording, opening on the finished result”
  • “Cut the stretch from 0:12 to 0:18 where I wait for the page to load”
  • “Cut away to the screen recording while I describe each step”
  • “Add captions and a short on-screen line for each step”
  • “Export 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 versions”

Questions

How long should a product demo ad be?
Usually 15 to 45 seconds for social ads. Long enough to show one job from start to finish, short enough that nothing drags. A longer walkthrough belongs on your website or YouTube, not in a cold ad.
Should I show my face in a demo ad?
It helps, but it isn't required. A few seconds of you naming the problem before the screen recording makes the ad feel personal and builds trust.
Can I use a demo ad on Reels and TikTok?
Yes. Reframe it to 9:16, zoom into the important part of the screen so it reads on a phone, and add captions for viewers watching with the sound off.
