Which aspect ratio for which platform?
Vertical 9:16 fills a phone screen: Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Stories. 4:5 is the tall feed post on Instagram and Facebook. 1:1 is square. 16:9 is landscape, for YouTube, websites and presentations. Each platform publishes its own current specs; check them before a paid campaign.
For one ad on several platforms, export the same edit at more than one ratio rather than letting each app crop it for you.
Why a crop loses so much
Cropping a 16:9 landscape recording to 9:16 vertical keeps only about a third of the frame. Anything outside the centre is gone, so a speaker who moves, or two people side by side, falls out of shot. The fix is to follow the subject, not crop the centre.
MirrorCut's reframing tracks the speaker and keeps them in frame, for every format you need.
Questions
- What size is a 9:16 video?
- 1080×1920 pixels in HD, and 2160×3840 in 4K.
- Why are the crop sizes even numbers?
- Most video encoders need even widths and heights, so the calculator rounds each side down to an even number.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. You type two numbers and the calculator runs in your browser.
