SRT and VTT: what's the difference?
Both are plain-text caption files: a list of captions, each with a start time, an end time and the words. SRT (SubRip) numbers every caption and writes milliseconds after a comma, like 00:00:01,000. WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT line, uses a full stop (00:00:01.000) and can carry extra settings such as position.
Video players on the web (the HTML <track> element) need VTT. Most editing apps and many upload forms take SRT. That's usually why you need to convert.
What the converter keeps and drops
It keeps every caption's timing and text, including line breaks. Going from VTT to SRT it drops what SRT can't hold: notes, style blocks, caption IDs and position settings. Captions with no text or a broken timing line are skipped, so check the count after converting.
Questions
- Is my caption file uploaded?
- No. The conversion runs in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
- Can it convert VTT to SRT too?
- Yes. It detects the format from the file: a VTT file becomes SRT, and an SRT file becomes VTT.
- Can I make captions from a video here?
- This tool converts captions you already have. To make captions from a recording, MirrorCut transcribes it and styles the captions for you.
