How long should a caption line be?
For subtitles on a wide screen, Netflix's English style guide allows up to 42 characters a line and two lines at once. Captions on vertical Shorts and Reels are usually shorter, often one line of a few words, so they stay readable on a phone and don't cover the speaker.
The splitter breaks only between words and starts a new caption after each full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, so a caption rarely runs into the next sentence.
About the timings
A transcript has no timestamps, so each caption gets as long on screen as its words take to say at the pace you pick, back to back from the start. That's a draft: real speech pauses and speeds up, so line the captions up with the audio in your editor before you publish.
For captions timed to every spoken word, MirrorCut's auto captions transcribe the recording itself. Already have an SRT and need VTT? Use the SRT to VTT converter.
Questions
- How do I turn a text file into an SRT?
- Paste the text above, choose the line length and lines per caption, and download the .srt file. Then fix the timings against the audio in your video editor.
- Does it work for Hindi?
- Yes. It splits Hindi text between words and treats the danda (।) as the end of a sentence.
- Is my transcript uploaded?
- No. It's split in your browser; nothing you paste leaves your device.
